Easy Ways to Get the Whole Family Brushing

mother and daughter baby girl brushing their teeth togetherWhile good oral hygiene is important at every stage in life, it’s particularly important if you have braces. Braces can trap bacteria against teeth, and need to be properly looked after in order for you to avoid cavities and other oral problems.

One of the best ways to encourage your child (or yourself) to take care of his or her teeth during braces is to get the whole family involved. Here’s a look at some fun, different ways to get your whole family brushing.

Pick the Right Tools

One of the easiest ways to get kids or adults of any age brushing and flossing is to let them pick their own tools. When a child has a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and dental rinse that comes in the style, color, and flavor that he wants, he is much more likely to use them. This might mean picking out more than one variety of toothpaste, but the extra tubes are worth it when you find everyone brushing.

Have a Routine

Another great thing to help your family develop good oral hygiene habits is to make sure it is part of their daily routine. To help the habit start, place reminders in the bathroom near the sink and give vocal reminders before people leave the house in the morning or go to bed at night.

Add Some Fun

The quickest way for your family to lose interest in daily brushing is when they feel like it is just another chore that has to get done. Depending on the ages of your children, there are a few different things you can do to add some fun to brush time. Try having a special brushing song that plays while they are in the bathroom or a sticker chart that lets them show off their brushing accomplishments. If you have a competitive family, try creating a contest that rewards the family member that is the most consistent with his or her brushing and flossing.

By getting the entire family involved, not only will you help the braces wearer, you will help your entire family get on the path of good oral hygiene and beautiful, healthy teeth.
